Snapshots from a traveler #12

So here I am in Australia, and though I've been here six days, it feels like I've been here ages. That's what Australia does: it sucks you in.

Now, I could be sharing a photo of Sydney Harbour in this space, but that has been done before. So instead I present a photo of the 131-year-old Shiraz vines at Tyrrell's Wines in the Hunter Valley.
I would have tried some of their Shiraz, but I got too tipsy on glass after glass of verdelho and chardonnay. That happens sometimes.

Tyrrell's Wines, Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia, September 2009.

WOW! As an avid enophile I am totally impressed. As 131 year old vines, these would have been planted around the middle-end of the French wine blight. Wonder if there's a connection? I haven't done any research into that history, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was a motivation there. Safe travels!

Jen, I did not know you were an avid enophile! Excellent. The fellow from the winery leading our tour did not mention the blight. But it is quite an interesting theory, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there was a connection. At any rate, I am always impressed to view flora that's been alive and thriving for more than a century.

Hope you guys are doing well!
